THE STATE WILL COVER UP TO 500 EUROS FOR YOUR NEW E-BIKE: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO GET THE SUBSIDY WITHOUT THE STRESS

Published: March 20, 2026 | Reading time: 6 min

Electric bikes have completely changed the way we move around cities in recent years. No more arriving at work sweaty or searching for (and paying for) expensive parking. However, the initial investment in a high-quality and safe electric bike is not negligible. Fortunately, the state, through the company Borzen, has provided a fantastic opportunity: non-refundable financial incentives (subsidies) for the purchase of electric bikes.

Even though funds are available (the total fund amounts to a staggering 6.5 million euros), many people are deterred by the thought of "bureaucracy" and the fear of filling out the wrong form. But let us reassure you: the process is actually fast and entirely digital. If you have the right information and buy from the right retailer, the subsidy is practically guaranteed.

In this article, we explain who is eligible for the subsidy, which bikes qualify, and most importantly – how to avoid the most common trap that could lead to your application being rejected.

1. Basic rules: Who gets the money and which bikes count?

The subsidy is not intended for sports ventures in the mountains, but for daily mobility – i.e., commuting to work, running errands, or going to school. The amount of the subsidy for standard city or folding electric bikes is 25% of the retail price, up to a maximum of 500 EUR. (If you are buying an electric cargo bike, it is even 30% up to 1,000 EUR).

For a bike to meet Borzen's conditions, it must meet strict requirements:

  • Price limit: The retail price of the city or folding electric bike (including VAT and discounts) must not exceed 2,500 EUR.
  • Standard equipment: The bike must be equipped as standard by the manufacturer with mudguards and lights. (Retrofitting does not count!).
  • Motor: The electric motor may only assist you when you are pedaling (EPAC standard), its power must not exceed 250 W, and the assistance must cut off at a speed of 25 km/h.

📝 6 Key documents for a successful application submission:

  • Photograph of the bike: A clear picture showing the entire electric bike.
  • Invoice: It must be issued in your name and surname. A pro-forma invoice is not enough!
  • Proof of payment: Bank statement, receipt from a POS terminal, or a statement from the seller that the invoice has been paid in full.
  • Warranty card: With the model, serial number, and date of purchase stated.
  • Seller's statement: An official, stamped, and signed Borzen form from the store where you bought the bike (at evolt.si, we take care of this).
  • Beneficiary's statement: Your signed form.

The two-year golden rule

Once the state approves and pays the funds into your bank account (this happens within 60 days of the decision), you commit to one important condition: you must keep the electric bike in your possession for at least 2 years. During this time, you must not sell or give it away, as you would otherwise have to return the subsidy.

2. The hidden bureaucratic trap: Why buying from a foreign online store often means your application will be rejected?

Just as we wrote regarding electric scooters, people often turn to foreign platforms and look for the cheapest deals. But Borzen has set strict rules for subsidies, which often leave buyers from abroad (or unverified online stores) empty-handed.

The key document for the approval of the application is the Seller's Statement. This must be submitted in the Slovenian language. With it, the seller commits under criminal and material liability to provide you with a free first adjustment service (in Slovenia!) and service for the entire warranty period. Chinese or huge European online retailers often do not want to or cannot sign this statement, as they do not have authorized service centers in Slovenia.

WHERE TO BUY AN E-BIKE FOR A WORRY-FREE SUBSIDY?

FOREIGN ONLINE STORES ⛔
(Foreign online giants)

  • Seller's statement: Foreign sellers often ignore Slovenian forms or do not want to sign them under criminal liability.
  • Compliance and standard equipment: Often, bikes do not have the appropriate EU certificates and integrated mudguards/lights, which automatically means the application will be rejected.

eVolt.si STORE ✅
(Local and safe)

  • Prepared documentation: Upon purchase, we automatically and correctly fill out all the necessary documentation for Borzen.
  • 100% Compliance: Our range of city electric bikes already meets all technical requirements for obtaining a subsidy of up to 500€ as standard.

3. Submission process: From click to money in your account

The application submission process is entirely digitized. Once you buy an electric bike from us and collect the documentation, do the following:

  1. Go to the web application kolesa.borzen.si and create an account (with your email and password).
  2. Click on the "NEW APPLICATION" button and fill in your personal details, bank account number for the transfer, and information about the bike (serial number, price, date of purchase).
  3. The application will informatively calculate how much of a subsidy you are entitled to (e.g., up to 500 €) while you are entering the information.
  4. Upload the scanned documents or good quality photographs (JPG, PNG, PDF) that we have prepared for you (invoice, statements, photo of the bike).
  5. Finally, sign the application digitally with your finger (if you are on a phone) or with your mouse.

And that's it! You will be notified about all steps and the decision via your email, and the money should be in your account within two months.

At evolt.si, we strive to ensure you don't have to waste your nerves reading laws and forms. We know the rules, our bikes are top-notch, safe, and legally compliant. Your only task is to choose the model you like, and we take care of the paperwork so that you get your subsidy without stress.
